Becoming a member of the church

Why become a member?

At International Bible Church we believe that formal church membership is biblical, important and practical. Being part of a church is much more than just coming along on Sunday morning.  The Bible talks about believers as being a family, a building or a body.  We belong to one another.  In fact, there are many, many "one another" exhortations given to the local churches that received letters from the apostles.  So as a local church family, we covenant together to care for one another, to build each other up, to watch over one another.  We are accountable to one another for our Christian lives.  We are a needy people who are prone to wander and as such we need the local church to persevere.  That local church is structured with elders and deacons that God has given us to lead us and care for us. As members we are both accountable to our leaders and together we hold them accountable to biblical standards.  We all need each other.  In the New Testament, we don’t see all the processes that we might have today, but we do see a clear picture of the local church knowing who belongs to the fellowship and who is just a visitor. Even if you are with us for a short while, we would like you to consider becoming a formal member with us.  The process isn't difficult or time consuming.

Who can become a church member?

We want to welcome into membership all those who profess and follow Christ and who have put their confidence in him and his sacrificial death alone for their salvation.. As a church we adhere to the Baptist Faith and Message 2000.  It is our benchmark, but that doesn't mean that you have to agree with every jot and tittle to belong to our fellowship and serve. When you meet up with two of the elders, You will have the opportunity to talk about how your beliefs align or not with our confession of faith. Do take the time to read through it before that interview.

How do I become a church member?

First of all, have a chat with the pastor or one of the elders and they will explain the process and arrange a time for you to meet up with two of the elders.  During that interview they will want to review your application which you can download here and fill out.  Typically, they will talk with you about how you become a Christian and understanding of Christ and the gospels.  This is a great opportunity for them and for you to get to know each other and for you to ask any questions you might have about the beliefs, practices and history of the Church and how you might serve in the church family.
